Forming part of the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show ‘The Illusionist’ was designed to illuminate the senses and captivate the imagination. Two large mirrors were specifically orientated to reflect sections of the garden that are both visible and hidden to plain view which visually expand the garden space and create an altered sense of space. Elements like water features that were hidden from plain view were then visible in a mirrors reflected view. A playful juxtaposition of the senses ensued through hearing the water feature in one place but seeing it in another, this was reinforced by walls in reflected views been painted a different colour to walls in plain view. A cantilevered timber bench and arbour create strong linear balance whilst casting dramatic shadows. Collectively all of the elements in the garden are designed to convey a subtle message whereby the senses exist in harmonious continuity.
